Reader,
Have you ever looked at your marriage and wondered…
“If this was really from God, why is it so hard?”
That’s a question a lot of couples secretly ask themselves.
Well, the Lord showed me an answer while I was standing in our backyard looking at Cacie’s tomato plants.
When she first planted them, they were tiny.
Just little seedlings sitting in plastic cups under a grow light.
Then one day…
I bumped into the stand that held the plants and one of the stems on the seedlings got bent!
It wasn't the plant's fault. It wasn't a "bad" plant because it got hurt. It was just damaged.
Instead of throwing it away, Cacie supported it with a small stake until it healed.
Weeks later, it had grown into a healthy, thriving plant.
Then something happened AGAIN.
By now, all the tomato plants had grown large and Cacie had to move them outside into buckets.
But a storm came through.
Strong winds bent the same plant over. This time the little stake wasn’t enough.
So we went to Lowe’s, bought a piece of PVC pipe, tied the plant to it, and gave it the support it needed to keep growing.
So, this is what the Lord showed me:
Our marriages are a lot like those tomato plants.
They were designed by God to grow.
But being designed to grow doesn’t mean they’ll never face adversity.
Storms come.
People make mistakes.
Life puts pressure on the relationship.
That doesn’t mean your marriage isn't supposed to be. It's just experiencing external resistance.
Gardeners don’t throw away a plant because the wind bent it over.
They strengthen it.
They protect it.
They keep tending to it until it’s healthy again.
The same is true for marriage.
The couples who experience lasting fruit aren’t the ones who never faced adversity. They’re the ones who refused to quit.
They’re the ones who prayed.
Who learned.
Who asked for help.
Who kept investing when it would’ve been easier to walk away.
Another thing really stood out to me.
Those tomato plants haven’t even produced fruit yet!
We’ve invested time, money and energy into them and we still haven’t seen the harvest. That’s marriage.
Sometimes you’re doing all the right things before you ever see the results, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening.
Growth is taking place beneath the surface.
If your marriage feels bent over by life right now, don’t assume it’s time to give up.
Maybe it’s just time to get some support.
