Reader,
There are moments in marriage when you are going to be frustrated with your spouse.
That’s just real life.
You may have an argument and immediately want to call your friend and tell them everything that happened.
You want somebody to understand why you’re upset. Sometimes you even want somebody to tell you, “you’re right.”
But we have to be careful about that.
Because when you bring somebody else into a problem between you and your spouse, they may develop an opinion about your husband or your wife based on what you told them in that moment.
So while you may forgive your spouse tomorrow, the person you told will still remember what you said. They will continue looking at your spouse through the lens of that one argument.
This doesn’t mean you should never seek counsel. There are times when you absolutely need somebody wise enough to help you see what you can’t see. But there is a difference between seeking wisdom and simply looking for somebody to agree with you.
You have to be intentional about who gets a voice in your marriage.
Protecting your marriage means protecting the relationship even when you’re upset.
So, ask yourself, “Is telling this person going to help my marriage, or am I just trying to feel better right now?”
