Reader,
One of the things we’ve learned in our marriage is that we don’t want to move forward on something when one of us isn’t really on board.
There have been times when one of us had an idea and the other person wasn’t sure about it. Sometimes you can see something clearly that your spouse doesn’t see yet.
That’s when you have to slow down and talk.
Sometimes getting into agreement just requires a little more communication and understanding.
We’ve learned that when we move forward without agreement, we end up dealing with problems that could have been avoided.
And this is where some people will say, “You don’t need your husband’s permission,” or “You don’t need your wife’s permission.”
That’s true in the sense that your spouse isn’t supposed to control you. But agreement is a different conversation.
Agreement means we are working toward the same goal. It means we’re not just making our own decisions and expecting the other person to deal with the results.
Marriage creates a partnership where what one person does affects the other person.
So, sometimes you have to talk longer, listen to concerns you don’t always agree with and explain why something matters to you.
And sometimes you have to wait.
That’s part of learning how to function as one.
The goal isn’t for one person to win the argument.
It's for the two of you to be able to move forward in synergism.
