Reader,
Do you know your spouse’s perspective of you?
A lot of married people know exactly what they think about their spouse: we know what they do wrong, how they bother us, and everything we wish they would change.
But do you know how your spouse perceives you?
Your spouse has a perspective of you, and that perspective has been shaped by their whole story.
And sometimes we don’t want to know their perspective because we know it may require us to adjust.
Maybe we don’t want to hear that the way we talk makes them feel disrespected.
Maybe we don’t want to hear that something we do makes them feel unimportant.
Maybe we don’t want to hear that they don’t feel understood by us.
But a mature marriage requires us to be willing to listen.
You don’t have to agree with everything your spouse says about you. Their perspective may not always tell the whole story. But their perspective still matters because that’s how they are experiencing you.
If you want to build a better marriage, you have to be willing to understand the person you’re married to.
If you and your spouse are struggling to understand each other, sometimes you need someone to help you work through the conversation.
